Blue & White Striped Pillow
For several centuries, strip-woven cloth just like this was the prized material for clothing throughout western Africa. Narrow strips of hand dyed cotton are woven into 4-6" strips then sewn together to make a larger piece of fabric. Indigo dyes can be made from local plants using the leaves or seeds of the Indigofera [indigo] or Lonchocarpus plants. Originated by the Yoruba this technique was spread and adapted by nomadic tribes such as the Dogon as a symbol of wealth. We buy or textiles from a tribal Mamma who supports the women who have made and cared for these materials. Each piece is a unique piece of art and varies slightly from the picture shown.
